Air Formation is a training organisation specialising in the aerospace industry. It supports airlines, maintenance organisations, manufacturers, and subcontractors in the design and delivery of technical, regulatory, and operational training programmes.
In an environment highly regulated by EASA, training is a key challenge in terms of compliance, safety, and maintaining professional competencies. Air Formation designs learning solutions that enable organisations to train, assess, and sustainably demonstrate the skills and competencies of their employees.
Testimonial by Fanny Simonin.
This combination of human proximity, professionalism, and a constant commitment to moving projects forward is, in my opinion, one of Experquiz’s greatest strengths.
What is your role at Air Formation and what are the specific features of the training programmes you design?
I am Head of the e-learning department. My role is to manage all digital training projects, from analysing needs through to the deployment of training solutions for our clients.
We develop both training programmes from our catalogue and customised learning pathways for various stakeholders in the aerospace industry. A significant proportion of these programmes address regulatory requirements related to aviation safety and the ongoing maintenance of professionals’ competencies.
I coordinate these projects with clients, subject matter experts, and our internal teams in order to design the most appropriate learning solutions for their needs.
Why is training such a strategic issue in the aerospace industry?
In our sector, training is not simply a tool for developing skills. It is a regulatory requirement directly linked to the framework established by EASA, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.
Companies must demonstrate that their employees meet the standards defined by regulations. Behind these requirements lie very concrete challenges: operational safety, incident prevention and, in the most critical situations, the protection of human lives.
The organisations we support are regularly audited. They must be able to prove that their teams are properly trained and that the required competencies are maintained over time. This requires an exceptionally high level of rigour in the design and monitoring of training programmes.
Why did you decide to change your approach to continuous professional training?
Historically, our training programmes were designed in a very linear way. Learners had to complete all the planned modules and then take a final assessment to obtain their certification.
This approach remains relevant for initial training, where acquiring all the fundamental knowledge is essential. However, for continuing professional development, it quickly showed its limitations. Experienced professionals were required to spend hours reviewing content they already fully mastered. This represented a significant investment of time for learners, but also for companies that needed their employees back in the field as quickly as possible.
For several years, we had therefore been looking to change this approach. In aviation, training programmes are still largely based on required training durations, whereas our objective is above all to ensure that the necessary competencies are genuinely mastered.
When we discovered adaptive learning approaches, we immediately recognised their potential. This approach perfectly matched our ambition to focus training efforts on each learner’s actual needs.
Why did you choose Experquiz?
We discovered Experquiz at a professional e-learning event, at a time when we were looking for a solution capable of bringing our adaptive learning vision to life.
The platform enabled us to implement this approach in a highly operational way by adapting learning pathways to learners’ actual levels.
For our technical and regulatory training programmes, which can involve several hours of learning, this was a decisive factor. Experquiz provided the flexibility we needed to create personalised pathways while maintaining the high level of standards expected in our industry.
How do you use Experquiz today?
We mainly use Experquiz for continuing professional training.
Learners begin with a placement assessment that allows us to precisely identify the competencies they have already acquired and those that require further development.
When a learning objective is mastered, it is validated. When a difficulty is identified, the learner is directed towards the relevant module to consolidate their knowledge before being assessed again.
Once all competencies have been validated, the learner obtains their certification. We have therefore moved from a one-size-fits-all approach to a model based on competency assessment and progression.
How did learners respond to this new approach?
This approach is quite different from the more traditional training pathways learners were used to. With adaptive learning, they begin by assessing their knowledge before accessing the training content.
At first, this can sometimes be surprising, especially for people who expect to follow the entire programme from the start. However, they quickly understand the value of the approach when they see that their pathway genuinely reflects their level of mastery and their actual needs.
Learners also appreciate this assessment-and-learning approach. Questions are not only used to measure knowledge: they also contribute to learning. Through the explanations and feedback associated with answers, learners better understand their mistakes and continue to progress throughout the programme.
How has adaptive learning enabled you to adapt your training programmes to the diversity of aerospace professions?
One of the main benefits of adaptive learning has been the ability to significantly refine our training programmes. The main work was not focused on the content itself, which we already had for the most part, but rather on designing the assessments that serve as the foundation for adaptive pathways.
Our programmes cover highly technical topics as well as subjects related to aviation safety and human factors. We therefore had to build assessments capable of accurately measuring the expected competencies, without ambiguity, while remaining relevant for very diverse audiences.
By combining our industry expertise with our educational expertise, we have been able to design different learning scenarios and direct each learner towards the pathway best suited to their situation.
Over time, we have gone even further by customising certain pathways according to our clients’ activities. Aviation safety challenges are not exactly the same in a maintenance organisation, a manufacturing organisation, or an airline. Adaptive learning therefore enables us to tailor our training programmes as closely as possible to the operational realities of each environment, and it has become one of the key strengths of our training approach.
How has your approach to continuing professional training evolved thanks to Experquiz?
The first major benefit is the flexibility we have gained in managing, improving, and updating our training programmes. We regularly update our assessments to strengthen their relevance and quality. With Experquiz, these updates are very easy to implement and can be deployed without disrupting learners who are already following a training pathway.
We also appreciate the freedom given to learners. Once their pathway has started, they can navigate through the content according to their needs, revisit certain topics, or explore specific areas in greater depth depending on their level and pace.
Finally, one of the main benefits for our clients is that continuing training is no longer experienced as a systematic repetition of the same programme. Every two years, learners are reassessed on their competencies. They therefore do not automatically go through the same content again and can focus on the knowledge they genuinely need to strengthen.
How has Experquiz integrated into your digital environment?
We already had a platform used to manage our training activities, including registrations, orders, and payments. The objective was therefore not to replace this environment but to enhance it with the adaptive learning capabilities provided by Experquiz.
We developed a connection between the two platforms so that they could work together and automatically exchange the information required for learner tracking and pathway management. Our existing platform continues to manage the administrative and commercial aspects, while Experquiz handles adaptive pathways and competency assessment.
This architecture enabled us to introduce a new educational approach without disrupting our clients’ habits or the organisation we had already established.
What have you particularly appreciated about the support provided by the Experquiz team?
What has impressed me most in this collaboration is the quality of the human support. We mainly work with Anne Lalo, who is extremely available, responsive, and committed.
Whenever an issue arises, she immediately takes ownership, always gets back to us, and ensures that it is addressed. Beyond this responsiveness, what I particularly appreciate is her collaborative approach. Whenever we have a new idea or requirement, she takes the time to think with us about the best way to implement it.
This level of listening translates into concrete platform improvements. For example, we identified a need related to media management when updating certain content, as well as improvements required for some adaptive learning settings. The teams took the time to study these needs and provide appropriate solutions, enabling us to continuously improve the quality of our training programmes.
This combination of human proximity, professionalism, and a constant commitment to moving projects forward is, in my opinion, one of Experquiz’s greatest strengths.
What are your next projects?
We are currently working on developing our blended learning programmes. The objective is to better combine different learning methods and provide greater continuity between theoretical learning phases and practical sessions.
Today, our learners already complete their theoretical training pathways in Experquiz before attending classroom sessions. We have recently adapted our organisation so that they can retain access to their training resources for longer and navigate more freely through the content.
The next step is to create even more integrated learning pathways, bringing together theoretical learning, adaptive assessments, and practical activities within a single training solution. The goal is to provide a smoother learning experience by creating stronger links between theory, assessment, and hands-on application.
