CampusFER, part of Colas Rail, supports several hundred companies and rail industry professionals each year in developing the skills required for railway occupations.
In just four years, e-learning has grown from 3% to nearly 30% of its training activity. This transformation has gone hand in hand with the expansion of blended learning programmes, opening up new opportunities for the organisation both in France and internationally.
Testimonial by Michel Cardinal.
Whenever we encountered technical challenges, we were always able to discuss them with the Experquiz team and work together to find appropriate solutions.
Could you introduce CampusFER and the professions you train on a daily basis?
I am the Head of CampusFER, a training organisation specialising in railway professions. We operate in several areas, including railway operations, rail infrastructure works, and railway safety.
We train train drivers, traffic controllers, operators responsible for preparing trains for departure, as well as technicians who work on tracks, overhead line equipment (catenary systems), and signalling infrastructure involved in the construction and maintenance of conventional railways, high-speed lines, metro systems, and tram networks.
CampusFER is part of the Colas Rail Group, but we also work with a large number of external clients. Today, around 70% of our business comes from companies outside the Group.
Why is training particularly critical in the railway industry?
In the railway sector, training is a mandatory prerequisite for carrying out any operational role. No one is authorised to work without obtaining the appropriate certification or authorisation.
This is obvious for a train driver, but it is equally true for track workers, technicians working on overhead line equipment, or even someone who simply needs access to railway infrastructure.
Railway operations involve significant risks. Before joining this industry, I worked in the nuclear sector, and I would say that safety challenges are at least as critical in rail transport. The risks are permanent and not always visible. A train can approach without being heard, so personnel must constantly identify and anticipate hazards.
For this reason, mastering safety procedures is absolutely essential. Without training, there is no authorisation to work.
How has training evolved at CampusFER in recent years?
Historically, the vast majority of our programmes were delivered face-to-face, with a strong emphasis on practical training. Over the past few years, we have been investing heavily in digital learning and blended learning approaches.
Just four years ago, digital learning represented around 3% of our training activity. Today, it accounts for approximately 30%, and that share continues to grow.
Our objective is to further expand blended learning. The idea is to progressively move theoretical content into digital learning modules while reserving classroom time for practical exercises and real-life simulations, where it provides the greatest value.
The goal is not to replace hands-on training, which remains essential in our industry, but to better combine different learning methods in order to improve both efficiency and flexibility.
Why did you start looking for a solution like Experquiz?
We were already using a Learning Management System (LMS) that offered many strengths, but it was expensive and required significant expertise to administer.
We were looking for a more flexible solution, particularly because our business model is very different from that of a company training only its own employees.
Many of our external clients only need access to a single training module once a year. In this context, licensing models based on annual per-user subscriptions are not always appropriate.
Experquiz offered much greater flexibility. We can provide learners with temporary access based on each client's actual needs. That flexibility was a key factor in our decision.
How do you use Experquiz today?
We primarily use the platform to deliver e-learning modules and conduct assessments.
One of our flagship modules focuses on railway safety. It introduces the main risks associated with working on railway infrastructure, explains access procedures, and teaches the correct safety behaviours.
We have also integrated an immersive learning module allowing learners to explore a railway environment through 360-degree views. They are asked to identify hazards, answer questions, and deal with situations they are likely to encounter in the field.
This type of learning experience raises awareness much more effectively than a traditional classroom presentation.
You also worked on integrating SCORM content. Why was that important?
We design our learning content using specialist authoring tools such as Storyline and Rise.
To distribute this content through an LMS, it must be exported using SCORM, the industry-standard format for e-learning content. Compatibility with SCORM was therefore essential for us.
Within our modules, learners must achieve a minimum score in assessments to validate their training. We therefore needed access to this data in order to accurately monitor learner performance. We worked with the Experquiz team to make several adjustments that ensured assessment results could be properly captured and reported.
How has digital learning changed your ability to meet your clients' needs?
The main benefit is responsiveness.
Previously, we had to organise classroom sessions, schedule an instructor, find suitable dates, and gather enough participants. Today, when a client needs someone trained quickly, we can offer an almost immediate solution.
In our business, it is not uncommon to receive requests for the next day—or even the same day. Digital learning allows us to respond much more rapidly.
This is a major advantage both for our clients and for us, as this responsiveness strengthens our competitiveness.
What have you particularly appreciated about the support provided by the Experquiz team?
The team responds quickly, and the ability to communicate directly in French makes collaboration much easier than with many other platforms.
Whenever we encountered technical challenges, we were always able to discuss them with the Experquiz team and work together to find appropriate solutions.
Not every requirement received an immediate solution—particularly some highly specific reporting needs—but we have always worked with people who are available, attentive, and genuinely committed to finding the best possible answer.
What are your main development priorities today?
We want to continue expanding the digitalisation of our training offer and further develop our blended learning programmes.
Digital learning has also enabled us to expand internationally. Today, almost half of our digital training activity takes place outside France, which was not the case a few years ago.
We are also closely following developments in artificial intelligence. In particular, the demonstrations carried out by Experquiz around AI-supported evaluation of open-ended questions have shown us the potential of these technologies to accelerate parts of the instructional design process.
More broadly, we are interested in any tools capable of simplifying or speeding up the creation of learning content. This is an area we expect to play a major role in the years ahead.
Why is Experquiz particularly well suited to your business?
It is a flexible platform that is perfectly suited to occasional training needs and highly variable learner volumes.
For an organisation like ours, which works with many external clients who may only require a single training module each year, this flexibility is a real advantage. It enables us to respond quickly to our clients' needs while continuing to grow our digital learning business.
