How to choose a powerful online quiz maker?

14
January 2025
In a few words

Online quizzes are particularly effective for testing knowledge, engaging learners, collecting data to improve training or even simply creating fun activities.

It is still necessary to rely on a digital tool that makes it possible to respond precisely to the goals of the questionnaires.

Different types of quiz maker exist, more or less complete and more or less specialized: for example, some only do fun quizzes, others integrate assessment functionalities into a more global online training solution.

What are your needs?

The first step, as is often the case, is obviously to precisely identify your objectives and expectations:

  • Why use a quiz tool? Is it to evaluate learners, run interactive sessions or collect feedback via surveys?
  • Who is your target audience? Are they pupils, students, business colleagues or customers?
  • What is the desired format? Do you prefer short quizzes to maintain attention or more comprehensive and structured assessments, or do you need both?
  • How will they be accessible? Will participants have to identify themselves and log in, or will the quizzes be freely accessible?
  • What level of analysis of the results? What statistics and indicators do you need?
  • What is your budget? Some tools are free with limited features, while others require a subscription to unlock advanced options.

Quizzes are powerful learning tools when integrated into training courses. An elearning module can, for example, be composed of course materials and videos interspersed with relatively quick quizzes which allow learners to assimilate effectively  the concepts they have just seen.

Assessment in the broad sense can take several forms and can be used in different ways to significantly increase the effectiveness of the learning system.

Some LMS platforms that allow you to create and distribute elearning modules include quiz functionalities. However, not all of them are equal in terms of assessment and often offer limited features that are not sufficient to enable all of the possibilities offered by assessment.

So, if you want to use quizzes in a complete educational approach:

You do not yet have a digital learning platform (LMS/LXP/LAS)

You must then compare the solutions in their entirety and not just on the functionalities related to quizzes in order to find those that best suit your needs, both in terms of creation and distribution of educational content and in terms of assessment.

You already have a digital learning platform but the quiz features are too limited

Depending on your situation, you can choose to change platform, or to use another quiz maker that allows you to export the questionnaires in SCORM format in order to integrate them directly into your current platform.

Look for ease of use

A powerful tool must be easy to use, both for quiz creators and participants.

For creators:

  • The interface must be intuitive, clear but complete.
  • Creating questions, quizzes, and questionnaires should be quick and smooth. Questions must be able to be imported and exported.
  • Integrated functionalities allowing the creation of questions to be automated, particularly thanks to generative artificial intelligence, are a real plus.

For participants:

  • The user experience must be pleasant and engaging and the interface must be clear, even for users unfamiliar with digital tools.
  • The quiz must be accessible on different devices (computers, tablets, smartphones).
  • Participants should not be required to download any app or software to take the quizzes: they should therefore be directly accessible online.

Explore the different question types available

A good quiz maker should offer a variety of question formats to accommodate different educational or interactive needs. The most common options include:

  • Multiple choice questions (MCQ): ideal for testing factual knowledge.
  • True/False: simple and effective for validating basic concepts quickly.
  • Open questions: to assess critical thinking and writing skills.
  • Drag and drop or pairing: useful for assessing practical skills or understanding of relationships between concepts.
  • Rating scales: perfect for surveys or qualitative evaluations.
  • Area in an image: to combine interactivity, immersion and precision.
  • Blank text: to target specific knowledge while actively engaging the learner.
  • Order: to assess understanding of relationships and logical or chronological sequences.

More specific types of questions can be useful for assessing and measuring specific skills like soft skills.

Look for advanced features

Modern quiz tools often offer additional features that can make a difference:

  • Personalization: Can you embed your company logo, choose specific colors, or customize the look of the quiz?
  • Analysis of the results: Does the tool offer detailed reports to track participant performance? Is it possible to easily export the results to do your own analyses?
  • Instant feedback: Do participants receive comments or explanations after each question to reinforce their learning?
  • Options de gamification: points, badges and rankings can motivate participants and make the experience more fun.
  • SCORM compatibility: Is it possible to export questionnaires in SCORM format to integrate them into an LMS platform?
  • Automation: Is it possible to automate certain tasks such as sending invitations or submitting different questionnaires based on the results obtained, in an adaptive learning approach?

Evaluate flexibility and scalability

A successful quiz tool must adapt to your current and future needs. It is therefore important to check different points before starting to create a large number of questions:

  • Managing the number of participants: can it handle a small group or a large volume of simultaneous users? Is it possible to assign roles and permissions to users?
  • Multilingual capabilities: if your audience is international, does the tool allow you to create quizzes in different languages?
  • Integration options: can the tool be integrated with other software (LMS platforms, videoconferencing tools, CRM, etc.)? Are there APIs to make your tools communicate with the online quiz tool?

Consider security and privacy

If you collect sensitive or personal data, make sure the tool complies with security and privacy standards, such as the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) in Europe. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is the data stored securely?
  • Do you have the ability to limit access to quizzes or results?
  • Does the tool offer options for anonymizing responses?

Test technical support

Good technical support is essential, especially if you encounter any problems during use. Check:

  • The channels available for support (chat, email, telephone).
  • The responsiveness of the support team.
  • The availability of clear documentation or tutorials.

Compare costs

Cost can be a deciding factor, but it's important to choose a tool that offers good value for money.

  • Free or paid? Some free tools may be suitable for simple use, but paid options often offer more advanced features.
  • Pricing per user or per subscription? If you have many participants, opt for a plan adapted to your volume.
  • Entry cost: Does the company require a minimum entry ticket?

Take into account opinions and feedback

Before making a choice, consult the opinions of other users through testimonials or use cases. This can give you an idea of the reliability, strengths and limitations of the tool.

Experiment

Finally, the best way to choose a powerful quiz maker is to try it. Most platforms offer free trials or demos.

Take the opportunity to test the interface, functionalities and suitability for your specific needs. In some cases, it is possible to benefit from a free demonstration of the platform and personalized onboarding!

The different forms of assessments

In the world of professional training, assessment is a powerful tool to help with the acquisition of knowledge and skills.

Unfortunately, this tool is often used too little or even poorly exploited and is only limited to end-of-course evaluations to confirm or not the acquisition of the concepts seen during the training.

But assessment, particularly in the fields of education, human resources, and management, can take several forms depending on the objectives, contexts, and methods used.
